At Gazelle Sports we actively pursue, encourage and celebrate a healthy lifestyle. We have a vision to change West Michigan by making it the healthiest region in the country. So, we are very excited to partner with Nike to bring an inaugural all-women’s event called the Gazelle Girl Half Marathon to West Michigan on April 13, 2013. Gazelle Sports is hosting this event:
* To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Title IX
* To honor women
* To actively encourage new runners to participate in the sport
* To build relationships
* Because women’s health impacts family health
* To enhance partnerships within the community
* To raise money for women's charities
* To HAVE FUN!!
Grab your girlfriends, mothers, sisters, cousins, grandmas, aunts, or a co-worker and sign up for this event! You won't regret it! We promise! Whether you are looking to complete your first 5k or half marathon, or want to set a personal record, this race is for you! The half marathon (13.1 miles) will be capped at 2,000 runners who will enjoy Nike tech-t's and a unique sterling silver finisher charm from Imua jewlery by Terryberry! 5k (3.1 miles) finishers will enjoy a high quality cotton shirt and finisher prize. The 5k is stroller friendly. We also have a woman’s only training program geared toward the Gazelle Girl 5k. Come out to Gazelle Sports Grand Rapids at 6pm on Feb 11 for our information night. Training begins Feb 18.
Also, look forward to free Gazelle Girl Meetups that will start in January. Anyone can come to these free Meetups all you have to do is sign up! - visit www.gazellesports.com/gazellegirl for more details.
For the MEN: Having a women's only event breaks down barriers and the intimidation factor for many women. By hosting this event we know we will impact lives of women that may have never participated in the sport. It's about encouraging women to come together to celebrate what Title IX did for them. We can't host an event like this alone so we hope that men will support us as volunteers! Men are very important to the success of this race! The entire course will be re-opened to vehicular traffic after 3.5 hours. Runners still on the course will be asked to use the sidewalks. The finish line will remain open until all of the runners cross it!
We are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Title IX, the law that made discrimination between men’s and women’s educational programs illegal. Title IX had its largest impact expanding girls' and women's sports at the high school and college level. This ultimately created professional opportunities for female athletes. Sports wouldn't be what it is today without Title IX.
Were you personally affected by Title IX? We would love to connect with you and hear YOUR story. Please email us at GazelleGirl@gazellesports.com.
