About This Event
Come celebrate el Dia de los Muertos/ Day of the Dead with the United Neighborhood Organization! Over 2,500 runners/walkers are scheduled to participate in the second annual event benefiting the UNO Charter School Network’s afterschool programs. UNO’s event is the only 5k race that goes through both historic Pilsen and beautiful University Village neighborhoods!
Celebrate a Unique Tradition
The race coincides with the Day of the Dead, a unique Hispanic custom of celebrating past ancestors which has long been a Mesoamerican tradition. By celebrating this day with a festival-like event in the heart of Chicago, UNO promotes the health and well-being of the community, while celebrating rich traditions and culture with the next generation of Hispanic youth. All proceeds from the race benefit the UNO Charter School Network’s after school programs, which are located in Pilsen, Avondale, Gage Park, Little-Village, Tri-Taylor, Brighton Park, and Archer Heights neighborhood campuses.
The Streets Belong to the Dead
The Run/Walk starts at Bartolome De Las Casas Charter School- an UNO Campus (one block west of 16th and Ashland) and continues east on 18th Street towards University Village before circling back.
Overall winners and runners who finish in the top three of their respective age division will be awarded the official Carrera de los Muertos Champions Skull! Forget about your average medal/certificate, the Champions Skull is a life-size replica of a human skull and features the golden stamp of the Carrera de los Muertos.

Champions Skulls will be awarded to the top male and female finishers as well as the following age/sex divisions:
14 and under,15-19,20-24,25-29,30-34,35-39,40-45,46-49,50-55,56-59,60-65,65 and over.
